Advancing Safety Through Helmet Design

Bob Weber – Co-Founder and CEO of 6D Helmets – joins Heather and Clint to talk about the integral details of how helmets are made and tested. Plus, they discuss how the team developed a rebuildable helmet, allowing for greater longevity.

“You know, we could talk all day about this, but helmet testing is quite complex. And before ECE 22.06, which is the newest European standard, the DOT, the Snell Memorial Foundation, and ECE 22.05, we were only testing helmets at a very high velocity. And it was a pass fail test. You either passed or you didn’t. And in our mind, you didn’t want to pass by very much because those helmets at the very high end require a very stiff product be made. And that very stiff product doesn’t really work very well in the lower energy crashes — you know, the 3- 4- 5-meter-per-second type crashes that we have every day on our dirt bikes. You want to get up from that and get on the bike and keep going. The really stiff, firm helmet doesn’t do that very well.”
