“At least if you want to do something that’s going to have some gravitas to it — that’s going to last — you have to be able to tell a meaningful story. And a meaningful story is about the human condition, finding the universality in this.
You know, one of the things going back to Unchained that everybody used to say, ‘Freestyle motocross: those guys are crazy!’ Right? Crazy, daredevils, death wish, those types of terms.
Well, Unchained shows very clearly that is not who these guys are. Now, I’m not saying they don’t have a certain willingness to take high risks, but they are not crazy, right? It is managed risk. You know, the theme of Unchained is if you fall down, get back up.
We have a version of Unchained that is five hours of just the best sound bites, and people who’ve seen that are blown away by it. And that’s from 70 hours of interviews down to five hours down to the final 90-minute product.
So you have to say, ‘What am I trying to say here? What is the core of this story?’“
